April is Autism Awareness Month in the United States. However, at ISIS Healthcare Services we think, live and breathe Autism and other related ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) on a daily basis. New stats:  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated in March 2014 that 1 in 68 children are now diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This new estimate is 30% higher than reports from 2012, where the ratio was 1 in 88 children. Boys are five times more likely to have ASD than girls:  1 in 42 boys vs 1 in 189 girls.   Caucasian children are more likely to be identified as having ASD buspirone than African-American or Hispanic children. There are over 3, 000, 000 people estimated to have autism in the US. Awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder is prudent. More people are becoming aware of ASD, and most likely know someone “on the spectrum”.   It affects people of all social and economic standing. There is promising research, with many possibilities for the future. Reaching out for help:  If you have a concern regarding your child's development, it is very important to take action early. The following bullet points may indicate your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. If your child exhibits any of the following, please act promptly in asking your pediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation:

  • No big smiles or other joyful expressions by 6 months
  • No sharing of sounds buspirone, smiles or other facial expressions by 9 months
  • No babbling by 12 months
  • No gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving by 12 months
  • No words by 16 months
  • No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months
